Puppy Training

Good training that starts at a young age is crucial for you and your puppy. For those local to the Salem area, I would recommend calling The Pet Village for all ages of training. Jennifer and her staff are amazing! Call quickly for her puppy class – it fills up quickly. 503-363-3647
Under Ground Fencing

This is always a great alternative to fencing your area, or containing your pup if you are on acreage, garden, or in our case, a sports court. You don’t even have to bury it which makes it easier. This system works with multiple dogs, goes up to 5 acres, and is very verseable.
Garmin’s Delta XC – Shock Collar System

Having multiple dogs, living on acreage, camping, hiking, playing by water, or just have a naughty counter surfer – this will make your life so easy. I’ve always been a fan of this product and use as needed with my older dogs. Very rarely will you have to actually shock your puppy. Most of the time just using the vibrate feature will get your dog’s attention and get them to come back to you.

I love the quick delivery of Amazon. With that, I’ve compiled a list of toys, grooming supplies, crates, etc. to help make your transition into puppyhood easier. Obviously you don’t need all of these things, but I know your puppy would love them…

A good brush will seriously add to your pup’s daily grooming. This brush is specific for the undercoat your pup will have.

Make sure your pup has a good, thick collar.

A harness is great to use on pup until around 6 months of age when you should start using a good training collar on your pup. Use caution when pup gets bigger. If you notice your pup start pulling and leaning into the walk then stop using the harness. It will bring bad walking habits.

Puppy pads are a great way to continue potty training. Have them placed in specific areas: in front of the doors you take pup outside, and by their crate. You shouldn’t rely on puppy pads though. Frequent trips outside to do their potty is best.

I really love fencing systems more than crates. You will find that your puppy is growing so fast that you can’t keep up with the right size crate, and that gets really expensive quickly. This system is perfect in that you can put it in different variations, and set up anywhere – even outside. Add a top to it (even a blanket works) for more security. If your pup doesn’t feel secure inside this big set up then ask around and borrow different size crates, and put the crate inside this system. Lainey loved having an open crate inside her fencing system.

Every dog loves a Kong with peanut butter inside!!! Great for teething and boredom.

Lainey and the pups love this bed.

What’s a pup without a tennis ball (or 3, or 30) – your pup can’t have too many, especially when they get “lost” under the couch and beds!

Your pup will be going home with the beginning knowledge of bell ringing. I’m a firm believer that dogs need to communicate their “outdoor” needs, and can do so in a calm manner of ringing the bell without barking or scratching. Go to Youtube for more info on continued training. I would add that when they touch/ring the bell say “Bell!” really excitedly. Make it fun, that way when you want them to ring it and say “bell” they associate the word with the action.
